Teaching is a lot like being a Creative Director. I know that sounds a bit crazy, but anyone who has taught can understand what I am saying. The classroom is your team - you guide them through the process, share any tips of the trade, nurture their ideas, and see the fruits of labor after weeks of toiling away. Students always have a way of surprising me, because the best always rise to the challenge.
As much as I love design, I love teaching just as much - and sometimes even more. My students challenge, impress, and inspire me on a daily basis.
SCHOOLS AND CLASSES I HAVE TAUGHT (AT):
Miami Ad School: (2007 - 2014)
Type Journey // Voice of Type // Package Design // Vector Imaging // Visual Impact //
Miami International University of Art & Design: (2010 - 2012)
Layout for Photographers // Image Manipulation // Digital Illustration // Digital Grid //
University of Miami: (2012 - Present)
Graphic Design for Strategic Communication // Graphic Design for Advertising // Portfolio Development // Advanced Creative Development // Advertising Campaigns // Special Topics: Brand Design & Typography //
Most the Student Work you will see is from my students at the University of Miami, where I am currently a Professor of Practice in the Advertising Creative track at the School of Communication. I have also developed all the introductory design courses in our advertising track and continue to supervise them.
My belief is:
The first step to be a AMAZING Art Director is to be an GREAT designer.
And, PLEASE take some art classes - it's RIGHT THERE on the TITLE of the thing you hope to be.
I think Paul Rand would agree. (And if you don't know who he is ... just stop doing what you're doing).
* I want to go ahead and apologize to my students because while I could have an entire page just citing credits, you know who you are. *
